Poppies and Winter Sales ...

Finally, I've got to sewing up the blouse lengths I bought some time (a long time) ago.

Here is the poppy one ... nearly finished. Just needs sleeves, hem, button & button holes! Not bad considering I cut it out last night.

I hit the sales yesterday and bought a beautiful waistcoat/trouser set in charcoal grey - which will match this blouse beautifully. I also picked up a winter dress (like a pinafore with cap sleeves). I can wear the dress as it is under a jacket, or with a skivvy underneath it ... just need to get the 'right' sort of skivvy. My work wardrobe is starting to take shape very nicely!

Groovy Pants ...

HH & TBM have been drooling and dreaming about LoudMouth Golf pants ... but the cost to bring them over from US is prohibitive (about $180 after postage and exchange). So, after some discussions and sweet talking, I agreed to making the boys some pants.

Here is the first pair! I went to Spotlight, and found this fantastic fabric for $4/metre! Plus, they had a 20% off sale. So, these ones cost under $15 all up! The pattern was easy to make, but the fit was horrid. I ended up taking about 2" off the width of them on the outer and inner leg to get them to fit ... lots of muttering and stomping was involved!

Unfortunately, they have faded a bit ... but, at $4/m (less 20%) what can you expect? I have since made another pair - same colourway, but striped. Very clown like!

These are the next pair ... TBM's! He's rather proud of them!

They do look a bit like pyjama pants, but he's happy enough. After these, I made another pair out of black/white checks (about 1cm square) ... they are rather eyeboggling!

Boys are at a 2 day competition this weekend, hopefully the pants will contribute to their playing style!

Back in the groove ...

Well, not really sewing much ... but have been thinking about it! I'm sure that counts. I've just started clearing up my sewing space (yes again!) ... and finding the bits and pieces that need finishing.

Popped into a new opshop on Thursday, and bought these gems!

The magazine is 1959. Think the pattern could be the same era ... it's still factory folded - just beautifully kept!

My happy husband has hung my certificates on the wall for me ... I'm so thrilled with myself! Talk about a big head. I have 3 assessments and 1 test to complete and I will have finished Cert IV Management (HR). He'll have to put another hook in the wall!

Anyways, off to have another cuppa.

Sunny Saturday

Well this morning, the boys went to the golf course (as always) and LMS went to an Activity Group run in our shire (she's learning cooking), so I had most of the day all to myself! I headed on down to the coast to look at the fabric shops. Got to Spotlight and was just overwhelmed, so rang my mummy and asked if she'd come and help. They don't live that far, so I drove there, had a lovely morning tea, then kidnapped mum to go shopping. We ended up back at Spotlight and it was great to go with someone that:

a) loves me

b) likes touching fabric as well

c) has a good eye for colour

d) isn't offended when you don't like their choice, and

e) is really happy when you find something you like.

I ended up with 3 lengths of fabric and a new pattern. I was really happy with our choices, and have washed and ironed the lengths, so that they are all ready to go.

Here's a picture of the re-constructed men's shirt I made. It worked beautifully EXCEPT for the fact that I cut the scoop too low and it showed too much chest. Well, it was a good exercise, and I proved something to myself.

On the wish list ...

I found this beautiful blouse at Couture et Tricot ... I love the sleeve detail on a plain traditional classic blouse. Here is her re-creation of it. I like the shiny pink!

Here's the technical line drawing of it.

Figured that it would be fairly easy to re-create using a plain shirt pattern, and just take the sleeves straight down from the armhole. Would be low fuss for wearing, and because the ruffle detail can be smoothed down, ironing wouldn't be a problem. Next challenge is to get the right sort of fabric. I can envisage it in a crisp cotton, but then, I can see all blouses in a crisp cotton! Was thinking white (as always), maybe with a slight self pattern to it ...

Hmmmm ... will think on it for a bit, but I can see it being added into my work wardrobe!

Hmmmm ... not too sure

Here is me, playing around with the shirt. I pinned darts in the front to bring it in, it's obviously huge in the arms/shoulder area, but fits ok around the hips. Tried tucking the collar in to see what a mandarin would look like, not convinced.

Post Shower: Got it! Scoop neck (get rid of the collar completely) and add small stand up ruffle, maybe 1.5cm high. This can be from the excess length at the bottom of the shirt. Will cut the armholes out properly (using a current blouse pattern) and modify the sleeve head to fit. Thinking will do an inverted pleat at the hem of the sleeve to bring it neater at the bottom. Basically, thinking it 'out loud'.

Popped into my favourite op-shop (Treasures on Railway Pde, Kelmscott) and had a hunt around. I found 2 metres of nice soft shirt fabric which was marked down to $1. Bargain! Will put that away for the 'right' project.

Found some beautiful patent leather mary-jane shoes, but after I got over the joy of mary-janes, realised that they weren't 'quite' right for me. Settled for this beautiful pair of Spanish leather loafers. Will look perfect with trousers, easy to wear and comfortable.

I have been wanting to let my inner creative beast out, and so bought a men's shirt to hack into. Have had delusions of getting a crisp white cotton shirt for work that fits, this way, it might happen. Here is the 'before' picture. I need to hack about 3 inches off the shoulder line, do some tricky stuff with darts to make the bodice fit, and then ... well, that's when I get creative! Have some thoughts of adding ruffles to the bodice and sleeves, but may not have enough 'scraps ... will have to see. Could get tricky and do something fun with rik-rak. The possibilities are endless.

Dropped some of LMS' bedroom off to our local op-shop and picked up this lovely pattern. I think it has alot of potential. The front variations are different - roloux loops & buttons/zip or absolutely nothing (stitched). Will make up a test run first.

I remember reading an editorial recently (Stitches magazine I think) and the gist of it was that sewers need to stock up and do some stash building for the economic downturn. The theory is that a) it will put money into the fabric shops, and b) when times are tough, you will have fabric on hand that you can sew with. Not totally convinced about the theory, but it's food for thought.

Jeans - and making them fit!

I finally bit the bullet and bought myself some new jeans (new new - from a real shop - with a real price-tag - and with real money!!). They 'almost' fit me. Length was too long, waist was too big at the back. Gotta love Big W jeans - they have a great range, and they cost under $30.

Came home and did some research on the 'net and found this fantastic tutorial. Took a few minutes to actually process the information, but once I had - it made perfect sense.

So, this morning, took them up - and they are perfect! Basically, it's a tuck on the inside of the jeans, but the stitching is so very close to the original top-stitching, that you can barely tell! I ironed the tuck up into the leg, and used a little fusible webbing to hold it flat on the centre front & back. Just for my own peace of mind.

With the waist size, I make a slit in the inside of the waistband near the sideseams and thread elastic through until it gathers to fit. I handstitch this closed and you can hardly tell I've ripped!

Here's the back view - the elastic isn't that noticeable once they are on because they fit so well, and I wear my shirts over!

Now it's time to get out of my jarmies and into the morning!

Last night, my church held a Tenebrae (or Service of Shadows). Here’s an explanation of what happens:

The service of worship is taken from an early Christian service called Tenebrae. The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for "darkness" or "shadows." Tonight we will experience only a small portion of Christ’s pain and suffering the day of His crucifixion. One of the most conspicuous features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. As it gets darker and darker we can reflect on the great emotional and physical pain that was very real for Jesus that evening. Toward the end of the service, the Christ candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil over good. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of his death (Matthew 27) and his resurrection (Matthew 28:2). At the moment of the earthquake, the temple veil was torn apart, making the Holy of Holies exposed to public view. This is understood to represent God's change toward us with direct access to him, no longer requiring the ceremonial acts of the priests for our forgiveness of sin. The hidden candle is then restored to its place, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. By this single light we all depart this service in silence.

I found it very powerful and moving ...

Funky Shirt for Wednesday!

Here's me on the way to work today. I finished the shirt last night. Am pretty impressed with it, lots of room for movement, it all went together well. If I wanted more waist definition, I could take in the seams, but I like the feel of the fit, and I figured that as I was clean, neat and presentable, no-one will complain!

Have another blouse nearly finished - hem, sleeve hem & button/button holes go ... wonder if I'll manage it tonight ... hmmmm ... there's a challenge.

Am going to spend the day with my parents on Friday, and I think Mum & I are going fabric shopping - mum needs to make some trousers, I'm going along for the ride, plus, am going to 'see what I can see'. Now that I've got back into the mode of sewing for myself, might as well keep going!

On the way home today, I bought myself a pair of tapestry Doc Martin lace-up high tops. Will post a photo of them tomorrow ... they are really something to admire - I've never seen the like of them. They say "authentic" and Made In England, but I haven't found any pictures on the Net anything like them.

Hairstyles & Buttons

Well, after much saving, LMS got her hair 'done'. It's been dyed a dark dark brown (almost black) with blonde foils, and had it heavily layered. She looks quite different, and far more 'teenage'.

My blouse is just about finished. Went to the fabric shop on way home, couldn’t find a single piece of fabric to buy, although I did find a pattern I liked. Something to think on. Problem is that it is designed to use soft floaty fabric, and I don’t do see-through (at all). Might have to bite the bullet and try Spotlight again. Main reason for going was to buy buttons, but their range was less than impressive.

Sat on couch and went through my button collection and after about ½ hour of sifting through, found 5 buttons that (nearly) match. They’re close enough to get away with, and I don’t think they’ll be bad enough to trigger off any visits from the Button Police! So, can do buttonholes today and hang blouse in the wardrobe!

Well, off to get the day started.

Swaps and toiles!

I participated in the Sew Mama Sew fat quarter swap, and have received 2 thus far ... they're both really pretty, and I'm looking forward to using them.

Went to the fabric shop on Friday and bought fabric for a skirt & a blouse. Haven't sewn for myself (successfully) for a long time ... hoping to break the drought.

This is the skirt - from a 1970's Enid Gilchrist pattern. I altered the panel slightly to give it a bit more 'flare'. It's nice, easy to wear and very work suitable.

The blouse fabric is linen/poly (more linen than poly) and I'm looking forward to making it up, just don't enjoy the cutting out part! Decided not to risk it, and made a toile in an old sheet first. Am very glad that I did, as I had to alter the sleeve to fit my arms. Need to tweak it a little on the shoulder and shorten the length. Other than that, a surprisingly easy make!

Check out that dreadful posture!! Oh, spot the neck scar - impressive isn't it!! It's healing, but still very red.

Card making & Paper Dollies

Some time ago, I bought this fantastic book/kit called Paper Fashions by Klutz. My niece (waves to Bethany) had it and her creations were so wonderful, I was hooked!! Anyways, after much hunting and searching, LMS & I got our own copy.

Been at a bit of a loose end, so got out the book, and started tracing and cutting. Is rather therapeutic (and addictive) ... so, here are the results!

Photos aren't wonderful, and colours didn't come out 'quite' right, but trust me, they're cute!

Pretty Basket!

I've been wandering from one thing to the next today, without much of a plan ... and on one of my wanders, made this little basket for my laundry. The rectangle was 45 x 19cm and the corners were mitred at 8cm. Clear as mud I guess!

Felt that this was a little too tall for my liking ...

So I turned the top over to form a cuff ... much prettier.

And here it is in it's new home! That thing sticking out of the side is a bike pump attachment ... why is it in the laundry? No idea!!!

Lovely Laundry Shelves

Happy Husband was wonderful enough to put up these shelves in the laundry. Really, they're his idea as he didn't like everything on the washing machine (one of the downsides of a front loader). So ... ta da ... here it is, neat, tidy and pretty!

I'm going to make a basket to replace the margarine container - it's the home for those 'lost' items - golf tees, bike bits, retic parts etc etc - stuff that comes out of pockets!

New batteries equals new pictures

Yep - took a while to figure out that the camera needed new batteries! Here's Charlie keeping me company while I update my blog! Now he's sitting at my feet hoping for biscuits!!

I've been busy doing ... well ... nothing! Can't think of overmuch that I've achieved at all. This is LMS' ds case that I made last week ... she chose the fabric and I spent a few nights getting pictures in my head to work! This isn't exactly what I imagined, however, it is still great and does the job! The front pocket is for the games carrier.

And, next onto some more bibs! Was lost for things to sew, so figured that bibs are handy, easy and I had the fabric! Plus, got to make some more bias for my stash!! I used to be able to put bias on in one go - no pinning, just fold and stitch - once and done! Now, it's a bit more effort as I'm out of practice. I did the snail bib the 'correct way' ... stitch bias to the front, fold under and topstitch from the top. The second one was done 'upside down' which is how I was taught at TAFE. It all came back to me ... much better! In reality, the bias is on both, no-one will know how it was done, but it was a dusted off skill for me!

Went to Spotlight last night on a whirl wind trip, and grabbed and paid! Phew. Got the fabric for my Sew Mama Sew swap, and some co-ordinating ribbons to 'make it pretty'. Will post them today. Got some pelmet interfacing ($2.99/m) from the curtain section - it's great stuff and cheap. Found the buckram in the sewing section - but at $30/m - I don't think it's the stuff that you stockpile! After leaving there, dashed by Sound Stationery and picked up some butcher's paper (tracing/drafting), white cardstock (always handy) and A4 & A5 cellophane envelopes - these are really nice for packing gifts/crafts in - makes them look professional and keeps the dust off!

Dust Cover!

Remember the fabric I made from strips? Well, this is what it ended up as ... a sewing machine cover. Not a highly exciting use for it, but it's fun and useful! Can't ask for much more, plus, there's enough scraps to trim a cover for the overlocker.

Baby Presents

A friend of LMS (age 15 ... poor love) is having a baby in April, and we wanted to give her a present for the baby shower. So, I saw Tracy's beautiful creations, followed the link to Homespun Threads, and made a pair myself - I used iron on wadding for cushioning, and felt particularly keen, and diamond quilted the soles.

Today,I borrowed a bib from my friend Penny (my children are well past the bib stage) and ta da ... a funky and pretty present! The bib is quilters cotton on the front and flannelette on the back. I've been trying to make bias binding each time I cut something out ... so that eventually I'll have a nice stash of pretty bias. It's a plan ...

A Prickly Post

I decreed that February is my "use it up" month as far as fabric goes, so I've not bought any, but am working myway through my stash! It's fun to put things together using what I have, changing, compromising, and eventually getting things to work!

Anyhow ... here is today's making ... It's a pincushion!! Called The Wildflower Pincushion! It actually took more fabric than I thought it would, and is quite big which was a surprise!

Here is one being ready for sewing (figured it was just as quick to make 2 as one!), followed by a finished one! Side view is to show the pretty fabrics!

Off to put pedal to the metal and finish the second pin cushion.

Happy Birthday Friend

This is what I have gathered/made for my friend's birthday present ... we try not to spend alot on birthday/Christmas gifts ... so it's time to get creative.

It's a Shopping Survival Kit!

The contents are:

2 fold-up shopping bags (made from a cut up doona cover)
jar of hand sanitiser (Avon)
shopping list (printed from the internet)
Pencil
Pen
Chuppa Chup (for the sugar burst)
Packet of coins (just in case you get short)
Bandaids
Advil
Teabags

The case is a re-cycled gift box that LMS received toiletries in. I put lovely cardstock on the front to cover the advertising, and made my own label (gotta love computers!).

She loved it - I had alot of fun putting it together.

Baby Whites Part 2

Here is the entire finished set ... complete with cricket bat!! I put a 50c coin next to the set so that you can see the scale. Because it's so late, I couldn't get the light right for photos, but you get the idea (photos in the previous post show the details beautifully).

The cap can't be worn, it's a representation of what the father wears (I even handstitched his playing number on the back) ... The First Grade hat is quite baggy. I traced around a bread & butter plate, took tiny seams inside to create the look of the pieced hat, and then stretched elastic around the circle. The peak has 2 layers of pelmet interfacing and cardboard from a cereal box. This was zig zagged onto the elastic, then I handstitched the top to the peak to make it neat and tidy.

I finished the bag, but it was too tall, so had to unpick and re-do ... the joy of living with perfectionists!! It's lined in blue/white gingham. On the back of the bag is a bat sleeve - which is how they make them now ... bat slips into a pocket on the back of the bag, instead of rattling around inside the bag with all the gear. The zip was a recycled one that I took off a backpack I bought from the op-shop ... bag broke, but zips were nice, salvaged about 3 of them.

The club colours are maroon/white & blue ... which is why I used the colours I did.

It's been a great project, the whole family was involved with drawing pictures, helping with concepts and offering advice ...

Baby Whites

Happy Husband asked last night if I had some wadding. Hmmm ... there's a question! Turns out one of the men from the cricket club has just become a father and there was talk about giving the baby a cricket related question. So ... I was asked if I'd make cricket pads for a baby!

OK then ...

HH got out a set for me to copy, and I firstly drafted a 1/5th size, which was too small, so we settled on 1/3 size. So, here are the pictures ...

The pads are made using rip-stop nylon and fusible batting. The leg guards have a layer of pelmet interfacing in the centre to give the pads form and some stability. The abdo guard (box) is made from pelmet interfacing and wadding around the edges.

All in all, this was a very fun project!!

Sewing up Strips

I actually attempted some patchworking today - it's not something that comes easily to me, but this technique was so easy that I had to give it a go! I spent an hour or so going through the fabric stashes and cut 6cm strips of pink/green/white/cream coloured fabrics. Was fun to watch the piece come together.

Now, big decision is what to do with it! I could add sashing to the sides and make it into a lap quilt, it could become a dolly rug, a tote bag, an apron, a bathmat, pillow covers, possibilities are endless!

Actually, thinking on that ... it would be perfect as an apron, well used and loved. Plus, it's all the colours I like so will make me smile as I wear it! Would have to fully line it so that the seams stay inside ... but that's very do-able ... hmmm ... food for thought!

Fabulous February Handbag

Welcome to February! School starts tomorrow (yay) ... I must admit that I look forward to the first day of the year with mixed feelings ... I enjoy having the house to myself and being able to do things, but I also miss having the kids around, their noise, their ideas, their general activity. Mind you - it's the cycle of the school year!

Now, onto what I've been creating ... and boy, am I proud of myself.

Here is my new handbag! My current (old faithful) has a minor flaw, the leather has worn away from the piping on the base. It might seem minor, but I'm a bit of a bag snob, and I don't like that it's not 'right'. I might see a boot maker to see if anything can be done for it. So, I took a pattern from it, and made a nice new bag!

Bit of an explanation ... bigger pictures are on their side because when I rotate them, they become short and wide and not at all like they really are!

Pretty in Pink!

Working my way through the backlog of jobs to do ... today was Goat Coats (for baby goats at a mobile petting zoo). LMS is working off a debt (I paid, she pays me back) and is sewing them for me! I love being able to delegate to her, she loves being able to earn money! Win:win.

We took a break about morning tea time and wandered down to our local op-shop. They're having a $1 day. We bought 2 outfits for Miss G (3) LMS bought herself a handbag, and I bought these fantastic boots for her. The boots were $2! Bargain. She is so thrilled!!

AND, just incase you though TBM missed out (as if) he is currently chowing down on fresh, warm banana cake!

Happy Husband has been to a course at the cricket club (something to do with responsible alcohol).

Finishing ...

A big Ta-Da ... finished the tote bag for my friend's birthday present. Came together really well, even though I lost the strap! Had to cut and make a new one which wasn't a problem, just a bit annoying. I attached a magnetic snap on the inside so that it doesn't flop around. The bag seems to be quite big to me, but my friend is 5'11", so she'll be able to use it and not have it drag on the ground (like it does with me!).

With the pocket, I put an inverted pleat in the front so that it could hold lots, without gaping.

Well, the next plan is to actually clean up after all this lovely making mess ... that's NOT the fun part!

Handbag Happiness!

Here is Penny's Handbag ... I sure hope it was worth the 9 month wait! The rings are reused from the handbag she gave me to copy. This model is a little bigger all over so that she can fit more 'stuff' in there. The front tag is a metal bag tag I bought from a fabric store - they were getting rid of them, and I grabbed what I could. They are perfect for making a bag look 'special'. The base is stiffened with a cut down vinyl placemat. I find these to be the best for bags ... they are flexible, wash well, and you can stitch through them. Plus, they are cheap.

Procrastination and the solution!

Well, the only solution to procrastination is action (in the RIGHT direction!). I've been procrastinating on a few projects ... and decided that I had best get them done so that I can have a clear conscious and a clearer sewing area!

First to be done is my friend Penny's handbag. I've had this for nearly a year to do - she's a very patient girl. The main thing stopping me was fear, fear that I couldn't make what she wanted, and that I'd fail. The reality of it is that she'll be thrilled regardless of if it's perfect or not, provided it works. It's a black stretch velvet, lined in hot pink satin. OK, they aren't the easiest fabrics to use ... so I put interfacing on the velvet and it's much nicer to work with, the satin is quite thick, so it's not as slippery as I had imagined. Last night I cut it out, today, I did the zips for the pockets. I need to buy a long zip for the top, and then it's go go go!

LMS is going to help Penny with her boys tomorrow (kid wrangling), so I'll drop her there, and take my carefully made list to the patchwork shop to get the bits I need to finish a few projects. I'll be able to come home and (potentially) get some things finished off!

Nimble Needle!!

Here are the two latest stitcheries - hot out of my embroidery tin (... which means I've finished them!).

This one was great fun - I didn't think I had the skills to do it, but I did!! I used chain stitch, lazy daisy, stem & backstitch ... and it worked. Not sure what it will become ... yet ...

This is the second one I've done using this pattern - this time using some varigated thread that a lovely lady (from Simple Savings Forum) sent me. You can't see the varigations, but they are there, and it really adds interest.

Cricket training tonight, so I'd best get organised and trace off some more embroidery to do ... otherwise, it will be a long and unproductive afternoon!

LMS has been sewing!

WOW ... after I said I was going to make Miss G (aged 3) some clothes, LMS wanted in on the action. We went through all the books I had, and settled on this pattern as one that she could do! It's from Enid Gilchrist Three to Six, Clothes for Boys & Girls (4/-).

Had to alter the construction of the bodice to fully faced, rather than muck around with binding and front facings. Much easier (for both of us).

She did a magnificent job ... I am so very impressed. I have to admit that I did all the handsewing ... she didn't want to, and hey, why should she!

At this stage, I pin, she sews & overlocks, and I iron. It's a fabulous partnership!

We (royal we) just need to get the buttons & button holes done and it can be sent up to Perth!

I asked one of my wonderful friends if I could sew for her 3 year old - she said she'd love me too ... Hooray! I miss sewing for little people ...

I was looking over at Tracy's Web-site and fell in love with the dress she has made her daughter. I just HAD to try it as well. So, here it is!! I did modify the instructions a little ... Enid didn't have an overlocker!!

The work in progress. The pattern didn't come from this book, but the sizing adjustments did ... had to take it up a size to fit the little girl.

The major admission is that after thinking "I MUST make sure the butterflies go up the right way" ... yep - cut it out upside down! Tough!!

Introducing the Amazing Aunty Boo ...

I thought I'd give you a taste of my sister's handiwork. These are just a few of the things she's made that are about in our home.

She make the most amazing quilts and patchwork wallhangings. Add into this, she is also a talented artist - one day I'll post some of the pictures she's painted ... but that's a whole other chapter!

It's been hot and well, hot here for the last few weeks, without much respite. The air con is struggling, but it is better with it on than without it!

Went to visit my parents this afternoon. They'd been to see an elderly lady from church, and Mum was talking to her about Enid Gilchrist and the fact that I was collecting ... she produced a bag full of patterns, dating from 1950's to 1980's. WOW ... what a treasure collection! I went through and took the ones that interested me (mainly the older ones), the rest will go to the op-shop.

Quite sure that ladies had hip/back problems in this era as they have to stand with their hips out, and their backs swayed ... hmmmm ... I also noted that there is a definate absence of tummys!!

The dress in this set is quite delightful, has a scalloped hem ... too cute! The skirt is an interesting pattern, has pleats at centre front, back & both side seams. Might be worth a toile!

Been following some Enid's on Ebay ... my but they are getting expensive. There is one there on Buy It Now for $25!! Ouchies! I'm bidding on 2 magazines, doubt I'll get them as there seem to be a few others who are on a collection spree as well (keep coming across the same ID's), both with bigger budgets than I have! Think I'll have to stop looking ... Ebay is quite addictive ... just one more, just one more, just one ... goodness, what Have I Spent??

Anyways, here are a few photos of something I made last year. It's a hanky holder, I didn't get a good 'overall' photo ... will endeavour to do so another day.

Apron Thursday

Ta Da ... finished an apron for ME! Had an idea rolling around in my mind for a week now, and last night, decided to just cut! This apron is one piece (plus straps) and the pleats are attached via a dart! I like this design. It's flat fronted, with fullness added in so that it gives coverage and is relatively flattering. Although in such a busy bright fabric, it's hard to tell what's going on!!

I have 1.5 sheets & 2 pillowslips left in this fabric ... Grin!! Thinking that fabric shopping bags might be next on the agenda, although it would also be nice to get the 'under construction' pile finished with!

Exciting Tuesday

Came home after a fun filled morning which included many cups of tea, lots of children, swimming for TBM (with children of different ages from 2 - 7) and the Cricket & Football Shop, then home via the op-shop!

In my letter box was a wonderful surprise. My first Enid Gilchrist (via e-bay) has arrived. The seller went above and beyond the expected, and enclosed another Enid magazine which was in 'very loved' condition (aka tatty), as she thought I might be able to use it. Can I ever!!! And as even more of a gem, there are some ripped out magazine pages from New Idea magazines, dated 1957/58, when Enid used to do a Sewing Page ... absolutely priceless!!

So, my count is now up to 5 Enids ... and 2 more coming!! Yahoooooo ... just have to check down the post office for whatever they are hiding down there.

At the op-shop, I picked up 2 more old Handmade Magazines, and another stitchery publication. Was a bit expensive today - $5!! However, it's all towards a good cause - making me happy!!

Home for another half hour, then off to cricket training, via the golf shop (TBM) and the fabric shop (me). LMS is having a wonderful time up in the city with my sister & her brood. She's sleeping over and helping out with swimming lessons, and generally just loving life!

Thought I'd show you my creative area as it is ... guess what I'll be doing today?? The photos are taken around the room ... so you have overlocker, sewing machine, embroidery machine, bookshelves ... and then more junk! The forth wall, not pictured, is where the computer/printer etc are.

These are the containers I bought from the Reject Shop. They work brilliantly IF I put the fabric away after I've finished using it. Duh!

This stuff is mainly LMS' fabric & some op-shop stuff (just have to get it there) ... oh, plus a box of golf records!

This pile is fabric/old clothes to make goat coats with. People I know have a petting zoo, and they need coats for the baby goats. They wear and tear holes in them all winter, and I spend summer making and mending!

Went to our local op-shop on Friday and had a lovely look-see. I bought a (vintage?) sheet set in garish colours, but it will be brilliant for crafting. I have 2 single sheets & 2 pillowslips. It has the potential to be ... shopping bags, pyjama pants, bag linings, aprons ... you get the idea!

While at the op-shop I also bought myself a denim skirt (gored, fitted at top, over the hips and flaring towards the hem). Very flattering. AND 4 arcoroc mugs. I love these ... they keep a cup of tea very warm and are just the right size.

It's Friday!

I have a beautiful dress that is a bit too revealing in the neckline, and I feel very conscious of the gaps when I wear it. I've been looking in the shops for a camisole to wear under it, but loath to pay the price. This morning, I found my ancient Knitwit pattern, and some black t-shirting, old bra straps and made this! I thought I'd err on the side of size, and made a size 16, however this was huge, and I had to take in the seams considerably, then add elastic into the neckline to make it sit close. All in all, it wouldn't win any sewing prizes, however, it will sure do the job.

And, as promised yesterday, here are the photos of the bag I made ... folded and open.

Off to do something useful around the house.

New Year's Day

Well, a New Year, full of possibilities and potential ... I feel I've achieved quite a bit today. I filed all the old bank statements (had back to 2005 in my current file!), turfed out a huge amount of plastics and yukky mugs, done 3 loads of washing. I finished off the last of the lavender bags, sewed and stuffed, now all 9 are waiting for handstitching ... will try that tonight (depends on how good the light is, and how my eyes are coping!)

Anyways, needed a new project for my embroidery tin, so started this one ... it's going to be the front of a tote bag. It's not as big as I had imagined ... so am going to have to be a bit tricky in how I put it onto the bag. Have a few options, one being it can become the front pocket, another being adding sashing to the outsides before attaching it to the bag fabric. Hmmmm ... regardless, will have to do the embroidery first.

I scanned the 'bare bones' in for you to see. It's a cat (duh!) and on the right from top down, a bird, a fish, and a mouse.

I didn't have the 'right' colour for the cat or mouse, so I used some seeded homespun and tea-dyed it. Considering the heat today, it dried very quickly.

I also made 2 pocket grocery bags from The Mad Quilter ... The instructions were great, but I'll tweak the sizes a bit to make it more 'me'. I used a doona cover that I bought from the op-shop for cut-ups and crafting ... it sure has fulfilled it's $3 price tag!! Will post pictures tomorrow (hopefully).

Off to sort out dinner.

More Enid sewing

Last night I drafted these cute undies from a 1950's book of Women & Teenagers Clothes, and made up a trial run. Few tweaks, and I made a pair to wear this morning. They are so very comfortable and easy to wear. I originally thought that the back panel would look like a nappy, but actually, it's very flattering (divides up the expanse with 2 vertical lines) and there is no chance of a wedgie!

LMS said that they are the ugliest things she has ever seen ... which, they probably are to her, she's a bond's girl!

I made up a pair in a soft white cotton, and bought some pretty sprigged cottons to make 2 more pairs. Have another pair cut out ready to go, but should really do the dishes first!

May post a picture later, depending on how they photograph!

Skirt Trial

As I mentioned earlier, mum acquired some Enid Gilchrist books for me. Tonight, I drafted my first one ... even following the instructions (from 70's styles)! What a dream! It worked. I made it up in an old doona cover, so that I could see the cut/fit. Perfect! I did have to shorten it as it was designed to be 46" long - I dropped that down to 31" ... quite long enough for a short woman.

It is quite clever in design, it is cut on the straight of the fabric, but because of the shape, it ends up on the bias. It's a lovely flowing A-line skirt.

Anyways, here is the pattern and the rough trial. It will be a lovely easy to wear summer skirt.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Well, what a wonderful morning ... all slept in until AFTER 6am ... that's such a bonus!

Much mirth and merriment as stockings were opened ... I did the 3, and LMS did mine! TBM commented that "Mum won Christmas" ... taken from a line from Futurama!!!

Happy Husband had bought me a swing seat - which is something I've wanted for decades ... boys set it up on the back verandah ... I think I'll stop working and sit and swing all day ...

TBM picked up his pay yesterday and promptly spent it at the game shop. He bought a Super Mario racing game with 2 controllers, and the kids have spent a wonderful time racing! Sure helps having a big tv screen!

Currently, LMS is making scrambled eggs for breakfast, TBM requested sausages to go with it ... what a feast!

This is the apron I made for one of my special friends. The wings are made from a cut up doily! All the embroidery is hand done - I'm getting very good at buttonholing! My fingers are quite mangled at present due to the amount of hand stitching I've been doing. May have to give it a rest and let them heal, then start again!

Op shop treasures!

On my travels today, I visited a few op-shops, just looking looking looking ...

I bought some old Handmade Magazines (50c each - bargain!) and a few old books. One is called "And So to Embroider" ... it's c1960 and rather delightful. Here is an illustration from it - showcasing the embroidered pelmet & curtains!

I also got 2 metres of white cotton patchworking fabric (soaking now) for $1.50/metre, in comparison to $6.99/m at Spotlight! Bargain!

LMS did some digging and bought 2 pairs of jeans, 3 tops & a pair of shorts. All suitable, all beautiful, and all fit!

Best go hang out the washing, last day of the cricket carnival tomorrow, and he has to wear a specific shirt. Hooray for automatic washing machines!

What a day!

Well, LMS is officially 13! Hooray (for all who survived!). We had a lovely family party (oodles of children, aged from 3-13!), games, food, chats and many cups of tea. Perfect! I did laugh, because she had labelled the Pass the Parcel game ... "Parce the Parcel" ... the funniest thing was that my friend actually taught her in Grade 2 & 3, so we blamed her for the spelling. She was adamant that she taught her how to spell!! We all laughed!

One interesting thing was that sitting around afterwards with the adults, there were 9 adults, and of them, 3 were NOT teachers (and I was one of them!)! One of the girls said "Jen, you gotta start chosing your friends a bit better!" ... 4 primary teachers, 2 high (mum & dad) ...

My mum volunteers at her church's op-shop once a month. She doesn't love doing it, but feels obliged, and so struggles through. She was there on Friday, and I had asked for a new embroidery tin. I use biscuit tins for holding my embroidery, and because they come from the op-shop, I can have a new one each year. My new one has Charles Dickens pictures on it ... rather pretty. While she was there, she spied some things that she grabbed for me ... are you ready? Wait for it ... Enid Gilchrist pattern books! 2 of them. I love these books. Mainly for the nostalgia, but also because I love reading them, looking, dreaming, and then doing nothing about it. These magazines are from the 1970's. 70's styles (basic designs for the mature figure) and Girls Gear (5-12 years). They are just beautiful. I am quite tempted to draft up the dress pattern and give it a go. Would be nice to have some dresses for work - put on, look good and go!! Thinking thinking ...

While playing around on the web, I found this website ... I loved reading through it and am almost ready to do some drafting of my own.

The other treasure she got for me is a publication from the Government of Western Australia, Department of Public Health, Infant Helth Service - Baby and Toddler Patterns. Cost: 2/- ... so pre 1966! It is full of simple baby clothes, and a list of what you need for your new baby ... absolutely priceless. Mum said that it's the sorts of clothes that she made for me when I was born (1966) ... so it's from that era.

Well, enough of the waffle. I have 4 teenage girls sleeping in the shed this morning (after the family party was the friends for a sleep over) ... there was giggling, laughter, singing and general girly type of stuff. TBM kept muttering words like "shameful" in regards to the general behaviour - because of course HE is never high spirited or anything ... Grin!!

Well, off to the next task (washing I thinks) ...

This is a wheat pack I made for my sister-in-law. I'm really happy with how this turned out. I have since stitched the opening closed, the pin has been removed!

Yep, there is a bit of a theme happening here ... they seem to be made from the same fabric - well, that's what happens when you craft, you use everything up!

And finally, the apron ...

I had this one ready to handstitch, but after looking at it, decided that the machine could do it! So, threaded my sewing machine up with the machine embroidery thread and did a passable job on the applique. I had fun, and it was very productive, done in an evening! I think the friend it will be gifted to will laugh!

Well, that's it for the minute, will post the last apron when I have finally finished it. I need to buy some brown embroidery floss for the angel's hair, and figure out how to do the face ... the instructions say use a permanent marker, but I'm sure I could do something easy with needle and black thread!

Well, for the present I am! Been struggling to get LMS clothes that a) fit and are b) suitable. School uniform seems to be the isuse at present. She finally relented and said I could make her some shorts! She gave me pair that she likes (from Target) and I cut a pattern from them, and made them up. She likes them! So, last night, made a casual pair. Will make more school shorts next year as kids tend to grow over the Christmas holidays ... must be the sunshine!

Anyways, here's the details of the casual shorts!

Yes, that is a shaped pocket you can see ... was quite proud of myself!! They're quite short (well, to me they are - I'd rather them around her knees), but provide coverage for the important bits ... and she's comfortable in them!

Getting towards 'thinking' about Christmas ... got the embroidery machine fired up and working this morning.

Here are the 2 camisoles I did for LMS ... I think they came up really well. Made cheap (Target) camisoles into something unique! The embroidery is on the left hip area ... will show when she layers, which is OK, they're pretty!

This is the handtowel for TBM. The idea is for him to attach it to his golf buggy and use it for clubs, hands, golf balls - whatever gets grubby!

Currently embroidering a monogram on a flannel for a friend to give as a Secret Santa present. I love being able to use my machine for others.

Got a bit sidetracked with some cardboard, fabric and used paper ... so here's the result ... Inspiration was taken from here. I cheated by using the sewing machine instead of folding and handsewing ... but then, why not??

Paper is an A4 piece folded into 1/4's ... this way, can guarantee that the backs of printing will be used!

Cleaning (sorta)

Am gently tidying through and am tackling the lounge computer desk. Hmmm ... bit over-run. But look what I found!

This was sent to me by Carrie, who is on a Christian Stamping group with me ... isn't she clever to make such a gorgeous card!

Once I've 'made nice' at the computer desk, I'll do a 180deg swing and go look at the sewing area. It's not too bad, just needs a bit of a wipe over and some priority planning.

Charlie Dog is a bit confused, I took the blankets out of his bed and put them in the washing machine (with very very hot water) ... will be a complete shock to his system. Next step is to get him clipped for summer. At the moment, he's just a walking furball!

Somehow or other TBM scored another day at home. LMS is going to be royally cross tonight. Originally TBM was tired and unable to get off the couch and wanted to 'sleep all day'. By about 9am he was almost cured, 10am was a miraculous recovery! Tomorrow it's school OR ELSE!

Well, best stop procrastinating.

Recovery Days ...

Bit of an adventure ... went to hospital on Friday to have the lump on my neck removed. It appears to be a bronchial cyst, which is an abnormality that can sometimes happen while the baby is forming in the womb. So, I've had it that long!! Was able to come home Friday evening, which was great, and tucked up on the couch until bedtime. Am doing all the right things and taking my medicine as prescribed and spending lots of time resting ... voice is coming and going, but appetite is alive and well!!

I was in a 4 bed room and when I go there, there were 3 lovely ladies, all destined for home during the day. Went for my op, came back to 1 lady, and had a chat to her when I was next awake. She left, and I was on my own for a while. In the afternoon, I got another room-mate … who sure made me long for home (or the ability to smother her with a pillow). From the moment she was conscious she was loud and demanding. LOUD! She must have pressed the nurse button every 20 mins from 3-6pm. If I needed a nurse, and they came, she’d yell at them to go to her, and hijack them. The doc etc came to see her, and as they left, she’d be yelling questions after them as they left out of the door. This lady had her eye-lids tucked … and was holding forth to me about wearing make-up every day, and how she likes to look nice etc etc … I put a pillow over my head and had a nap. She was most upset when I got dinner and she didn’t!! She asked the Resident Doc (who was checking on her at the time) to see about where her dinner was, who very politely said that she doesn’t deal with that, and to ask a nurse.

So, hospital was a bit of an adventure! Would rather not go back in a hurry … however, in saying that, the staff were just lovely ... you just don't get to chose your room-mates!

I've just finished reading two of Francine Rivers' books ... And the Shofar Blew, and The Scarlet Thread. Both are rather inspiring, but I think maybe I should have read them further apart rather than one straight after the other, what is that quote? "Comparisons are odious".

Well, think I'll make a cuppa tea and go back to bed.

Wednesday!

Dietes flowering out the front garden ... they are just beautiful.

I had a day work booked, but they cancelled yesterday, so I re-thought my plans, and decided to be a sloth at home. That worked until 7.40am, when I got a phone call asking if I could do a day's work. Printed out a map of how to get there, jumped in the shower, put my face on and out the door I went. This is a new school, and the office was just lovely. Really nice people, normal and down to earth. Did some bits and pieces here and there, learnt some new things, did an on-line course (discovered by accident) and generally earnt my money.

Came home and made up a big pot pasta bake sauce. Lots of diced bacon and hidden (food processed) vegetables. Will be enough for tonight, one for the freezer, and hopefully a lunch or two.

Here's a picture of a pie I made recently. It's officially a chicken, leek & mushroom pie, but I made it with chicken, bacon & onion. Either way, was delicious! Made one for dinner, one for the freezer, which is my current plan for filling the freezer. That, and buying marked down meat & bread.

Still trying to sort out the columns in my budget spreadsheet. I'm trying to simplify, but it is a bit tough, as I like to have money popped away for every contingency (and then some!). Big pay tomorrow, as I get paid out for holidays etc due to my contract finishing. Then, there is summer holidays coming, where I get NO pay at all, so it's a bit of a balancing act. As TBM says somewhat sarcastically "here comes Poor People Budget". LMS doesn't care providing her lifestyle doesn't change in the least! Nothing shallow about her!!

Had my first day of work experience yesterday. Definately not what I imagined. Spent the morning sorting out scrapbooking supplies. The scrapbooking supplies are for craft & self worth type activities with various kids in the school at various times. The aim was to get them away so that they could be brought out as needed. So, lots of sorting, categorising and labelling. I sat in on a lunchtime meeting which was a real eyeopener (District Council for Chaplaincy). So much goes on behind the scenes, agonising, red tape etc etc, and you only see the end product, without knowing how hard fought that end decision/project has been. After that, I was back in the Chaplain's office tidying, organising and generally 'making nice'. She's such a busy lady, never stopping, and doesn't get the time to make things orderly. The good thing about the day was that I was observing her role in the school as well as being busy. Win/Win I think!!

Anyways, time to go serve up dinner.

What a long break!

Well, it's been forever since I last posted, just re-activated my password, so I'm back in action! Next step is to get the camera and the computer linked up together. Until then, pictureless!

I'm off to work experience today, I've been studying towards Certificate III in Youth Studies. I need to get 60 hours of work experience to qualify and get my piece of paper with it's shiny gold star! So, will put in 6 hours today, and nibble away at it bit by bit.

This is how our sewing/computer room looked yesterday while I was trying to get some sense into it all. LMS's sewing machine really doesn't work that well, so it will go into the shed until I can figure out what to do, and she can use my machine (carefully), so that will give us some space. I tried to move the chest of drawers, but broke one of the legs off (it is very old and rather unsteady). Hmmm ... onto Plan B. Brought in the low-boy from the back verandah and packed that with sewing gear. Much better, also it's far sturdier, so that the embroidery machine won't shake it to pieces. We bought this cupboard when we were expecting TBM (15 years ago) and it's done various jobs over the years ... one of those useful things ... just need to change the handles over (eventually) and get the stickers off it (darn kids).

Couldn't get out of the room!

Bags and bags ...

After some discussion on Simple Savings & Frugal Aussies, have decided to make some shopping bags to hold my fruit & vegies in, instead of using plastic bags. Let's face it, they only get thrown out when home, so this saves a small 'something'.

I bought a sheer curtain length from the op-shop for 50c and made 6 bags, 1 gift bag, and there is another one on the floor (the overlocker didn't like it). I'll re-cut it and make it up this arvo (fingers crossed). They worked out to be 6 cents each and weigh 15 gms.

They also double up as washing bags for delicate garments ... I never have enough of these ... I'm thrilled!

One of the clever girls on Simple Savings posted a link to an eco lunch bag. I thought this was great, so made one of them too. Didn't have any vinyl, so used quilters cotton & rip-stop nylon. This provides a water resistant (rather than a water proof) layer, and will be easily washed & dried. Won't be able to test it out until I head to work on Thursday ...

And, a final word on bags, I just won an e-bay auction for a leather handbag ... I'm very excited ... looked around the shops and the op-shops but really couldn't find what I wanted. This will be lovely, and at a fine price!

So, best get onto cleaning up the sewing mess so that I can find things, and stop stepping on bobbins (plastic ones crack when you step on them!).

Wii got one!

Yep, Happy Husband and the kids went out after rollerskating yesterday and bought a Wii Fit. What a great little thingo it is too! Had oodles of fun on it, and my muscles are protesting today (what's new!). It very politely told me that a) I'm not as strong as I should be, b) I'm in the upper end of overweight, and c) that my BMI is far too high. Good thing it's a polite machine! I crack up every time I get on the board as it says "ouch" ... someone had a sense of humour!

LMS is marginally addicted ... ok, more than marginally, and TBM is trying equally as hard to make up the minutes that she is getting ... can you say "sibling rivalry"?

Well, I can hear noises from LMS's bedroom, so if I want a go on the new toy, I'd better go lay my claim now!

Sniff sniff

Still not 100% well, come down with a head-cold! Am very tired of being ill now. Went to the healthfood shop and bought the most disgusting medicine (ever) called Immune 8 which seems to be helping. I'm well in myself, just my body isn't working quite well enough! One of the lovely library ladies gave me some Chinese tea which is great for coughs. It's called Lo-Han-Kuo Beverage and it's delicious (very sweet) ... costs about $2 for a box of 12, and there are 24 serves. I think it will be something to keep in the house as it will be great for the kids when they have coughs and aren't well. Gotta taste better than Senega Ammonia (revolting).

Been a good week at work, my badge came on Wednesday, so on Thursday/Friday, I was official! Felt great! Been working on the school newsletter and it's coming up a treat. Naturally, most articles are arriving AFTER the deadline (wouldn't expect any different) ... but I mentioned that any late articles would need to be accompanied by chocolate (cheeky, but hopeful). So far, one department paid up! Ferrero Rocher ... mmmmmmm. Still waiting on 2 articles, then hopefully, will convince the photocopier to start producing ... need over 700 copies. Up until now, the school has had it done professionally by a printer. By doing it in-house, there is a huge amount of money being saved that can be re-directed into other areas. PLUS, the school is able to put out more than 1 a term - hoping for 2 ... have interest in the next one already! It's really exciting to be a part of this.

Picked up LMS's bed last week, TBM's is in-store today. The boys will go pick it up this arvo and hopefully, get it assembled for tonight. Have said that they need to buy a sheet for it, as it's a queen, and the biggest linen I have is double. Happy Husband said that we now need a new bed as he's not having our son have a bed bigger than ours (double). Bigger needs for us first are a new doona, and some chest of drawers where the drawers slide in and out!! We are planning on buying 2, one each - after 18.5 years, we don't want to share anymore!!

Well, seeing as I have the house to myself for the morning, am not going to waste it further, and will go get a few things done (washing, cleaning, dishes ... etc etc).

Weekend round-up ...

Right now, have been commissioned to type up a piece for Little Miss Sunshine on Common Wombats, yep - it's homework due tomorrow, being done now. Sigh ...

OK, homework seems to be in hand ...

Had a wonderful day yesterday ... LMS & I picked up our friends at lunchtime and out we went for the afternoon. First stop, the new Christian Bookstore at Southern River (Ranford Road). Was lovely, homely and fresh. Had a wonderful lunch there, and just blissful. Then, discovered an op-shop next door ... aaaaahhhhh ... went in there with winter clothes for work on my agenda and scored well. Bought 2 shirts, a lovely wrap cardigan (reminiscent of a kimono) and a brand new bra (with all the store tags). All up, under $15. After all our bargains, off to Livingston we went to 'do' Big W. It's such a treat to go there ... and I do enjoy looking around at all they have. Ended up buying some paper & card stock, more about that in a minute. Was time for another cuppa, then we all did some top-up shopping at Woolies, then back to our friends' home for a cuppa.

The Chaplain at work is going to run some scrap booking sessions during lunchtime for kids that are being bullied. Will give them a safe place to go, something to do and some positive re enforcement, as well as being fun. She has asked for donations and ideas. Because we thought it to be a good idea, each of us bought a pack of 100 scrap booking papers ($8 each) to give her as a start - so that's 300 sheets! I've also been through some of my sewing things to find trinkets and trims. She's hoping to do it for free, but I think she may have to settle for 'very very cheap'.

Today was LMS' rollerskating competition. She was in the Exhibition Class (pre-competition) again ... went well, although was 2 hours of driving for 3 minutes of skating time. Good thing we love our children ...

Discovered some rather nasty noises in the back of the car, stopped at a friend's home and the boys took the back wheel off ... turns out the brake pads are down to nothing. I will get them fixed on Tuesday (work tomorrow). Bit scary really ... will drive very very carefully tomorrow.

Have done some simple alterations to 2 cardigans so that I can wear them easily. Replaced an inside tie on one with a loop and button ... will wear well and I don't have to be a contortionist to do it up. The other one, I put a button and loop on the back of the opening. This cardigan is made from a polyester and the ties are very slippery and won't stay done up. This way, I can button it (invisibly) and it will stay done up. It is the most beautiful garment, and has a matching camisole top. It's a rich coral pink colour and made from a fine knit, with seed pearl details around the openings, and on the ties. Just gorgeous it is, and I feel very classy when I wear it.

Time to go and get dinner moving along, home made meat pie with potato bake and vegetables.

Creative Carding

Been thinking about card-making recently. Many years ago, it was my craft of choice. I spent alot of time (and money) on paraphanalia to create works of art (or greeting cards). It is a lovely hobby and very satisfying. More recently, I've lost the passion for it, and have resorted to buying nice $1 cards. Still does the job, but not as rewarding.

While I was down at library recently, I saw a card pack for sale. 40 or so handmade cards for $15. Had to think hard about that. Came to the conclusion that having a bulk amount isn't a good idea. If they're not used, they get dog-eared and dusty. Decided that I had enough bits and pieces to make a small stash for sending.

Out came my cardstock, cutter and ... oh dear ... no sticky-tape or glue! Not to matter ... Plan B. I used the sewing machine! Truly ... I made 8 pretty cards and have a nice stash in my card box now ... and saved $8 on buying them at $1 each. It's also a very good use for blunted sewing needles, as paper blunts them easily, you don't want to use a good new needle for such projects!

Sunshine & Sunday

LMS & I went to the Gosnells Markets today for a 'look see'. We did the rounds first, then went back and looked at everything carefully.

I got my eyebrows waxed, so that I am far neater & tidier to look at ... phew!

After lunch, I treated both of us to a 20min Chinese Massage. We are quite sure that it should be renamed "pay for torture" ... I lay on the table, and the lady climbed up, knelt on the back of my thighs, and using her hands, put her upper body weight on various spots along my back ... At that point I had 2 words "personal space" ... and that was just a taste of things to come ... she was very thorough with hands like vices ... dd's was a little better, she got an upper shoulder/neck/head massage, and the lady got the knots out of one shoulder ... but both of us were convinced that we won't be doing that again!!

We went to the jewellery store and bought hair bands for LMS so that she doesn't look like a shaggy dog, and while there, I spied this beautiful pendant. Yep ... I bought it for myself ... it is so beautiful! Also got a pretty hair clip for my mother, it's cute, but subtle ... hope she likes it. If not, she can pass it onto one of my nieces!

Meanwhile, at golf, the Blonde Mop had a great day and won the competition. He brought home a huge trophy, 2 x $15 vouchers (to the golf shop) won the monthly mug, and also a nearest to the pin! I told my husband that it was due to the wonderful teaching he received (Happy Husband came 18th!).

I've discovered a lovely website called Sew Retro which has inspired me greatly. I have even (gasp) gone onto e-bay to bid for some patterns ... hmmmm ... need them like a hole in the head! However ... maybe I'll get to and finish the dress I've got on the go first!!

Shoes ...

Back to school for the kidlets today ... yay yay yay ... ok, that was from the mum, NOT from the children, they were less than thrilled to be back! I've got the washing sorted, dinner defrosting, some washing folded, and started in my wardrobe. I got all my shoes out ... look what I found! 18 pairs which doesn't include my slippers or my crocs, so that brings me up to 20 pairs. It wasn't that long ago when you were fortunate to have 2 pairs, one for every day, one for church ... don't know that progress is all that it's cracked up to be in some ways ... however ... I digress.

Of all these shoes, 4 pairs were bought brand new, the rest are from the op-shop, and I have paid between $2 and $10 per pair. I love Mary Jane shoes, and have 4 pairs (3 black, 1 pink). My husband feels that the pink pair are the ugliest things he has ever seen. I've only worn them once as a result, and I think they may be re-donated for someone else to love.

These are my new RED shoes ... they are so very very comfortable! There is a photo of me aged 6 with red Mary Jane's ... obviously I still love red shoes!!

Well, while it's fun to be sharing with you, I'd best get back into the day and make some progress on my 'real job' being a home maker ... Smiles, Mrs R

I can see the shelves!

Still carrying on the tidying in cupboards! I won't say it's becoming addictive, but I do like the results. I'm now in the kitchen pantry, this is where I keep things that I use daily, opened packets, canisters etc etc ... you get the idea. I discovered that I had 5 bottles of honey with about 1cm of honey in each of them. I boiled the kettle, warmed them and decanted into the current honey jar. Waste not, want not!

Next step is to re-label the tupperware containers on the baking shelf, nothing worse than making a cuppa tea for a friend and using salt instead of sugar ... and believe it or not, it HAS happened ... they still remind me about that ... good thing I really like these girls!

I'm not venturing up to the top shelf today, that can wait until tomorrow I reckon ... not sure that I want to know what I've hidden up there.

Kids & I had a huge day out today (all nice things) and on the way home, I used some money I'd earnt sewing and re-stocked the back cupboard. It's lovely to look in there and see stuff ... makes me far more secure and content (I know it's silly). Now I just have to maintain levels. Still some things I'd like to keep on hand, but that can happen slowly.

Off to clean up and take the rubbish to the bin (or dispose of the evidence!).

I feel far more secure wearing this! AND because it's attached to my bra, it doesn't flap or move ... when I bend, it bends ... and stays close to my chest. Certainly makes me feel much more comfortable and care-free as I'm not worrying about gaps or gapes, and no extra straps to drive me batty!

Tidying, sorting & menu planning

Was watching "How Clean is Your House?" yesterday and was quite inspired to organise and de-clutter. Started last night in the bathroom, and emptied the cupboards and culled a fair bit.

Today, I got into the back cupboard (which lives in the laundry) that is my storage pantry cupboard. On Frugal Aussies, we've been talking about stockpiling and pantry stores. I was so happy to get in there and sort out so that I can see exactly what I have on hand, and what I need to shop for. I culled a huge garbage bag full of rubbish ... glad to see that go. Everything else got sorted, lined up and is now neatly arranged.

Top shelf, cleaning & washing products, light globes and a shelf for presents.

Next 2 shelves, packets, tins, jars etc

Toilet paper (not in the photo), wrapping paper, stationery & plastic bags.

Certainly not tackling the kitchen just yet ... that's a HUGE task that I don't want to think about!

Also went through the freezer stash and came up with meals for the next two & a half weeks (18 days). I have meat content, so should 'theoretically' only need to shop for basics and pantry stocking items! Will also put money aside for next big buy to re-fill the freezer.

Lovely lazy days ...

Well, in my dreams maybe!!

Yesterday I took Little Miss Sunshine to the ANZAC day service after which there was a huge country style morning tea. Lovely to see & talk to people in our community.

On Thursday a friend gave me some work to do ... 7 pairs of trousers to hem, and 14 shirts to embroider - on one side over the pocket the driver's name on the other side is the company name. First time I've done commercial work like this ... took me all day, but finished last night! AND pretty well done if I say so myself. Pictures to follow - having trouble connecting camera to computer at present!

Last night, I tried to make what is essentially a 'dickie front' ... based on the Winkie. Mine isn't as pretty, but does the job ... feel far more secure about a wrap front blouse when wearing it. I used press studs to fasten the ends as mine is just for me ... still looking for the perfect fastener, safety pins?? Smile!!

This morning, cut out a shoe bag for The Blonde Mop's golf shoes ... just need to throw it under the sewing machine and cross my fingers. I'm using a pattern from a library book, hope it's big enough for his shoes ... he's got growing feet!

Dropped LMS at rollerskating and TBM at the shopping centre (where he was 'cruisin') and went to the op-shop for a wonderful wander. Good oodles of nice stuff ... ok, a bagful, but it's all nice. A shirt & skirt for work, lovely casual comfortable shoes for every day wear - which are bright red (I like red), some new bras (1 for me, 1 for LMS) and a t-shirt. Not bad for $18. I always swore that LMS wouldn't get black bras until she was 16-18, however, considering that she wear a fair bit of black and looks really good in it, figured it was better than she have something that blends rather than contrasts (think pink or white or green bras!). Far more classy. So, that theory went out the window.

Well, better get too and make this shoe bag ...

Thursday, hems and dog teeth!

Popped into see a friend today, and he gave me 7 pairs of trousers to take up & 14 shirts to embroider over the pockets on each side! Good thing he made me a great cuppa tea and gave me unlimited access to the biscuit barrel!!! Trousers are done already, but the shirts may take some time ...

Charlie Dog went to the vet today to have his teeth taken out ... grand total of 22 removed. He will smell so much better and be so much happier for them gone. Plus, the bill is alot less than originally quoted (was thinking between $500-$600, came in just over $300!). I'm happy. We're off to pick him up shortly.

This is Charlie on the quilt my sister made him ... I bought a bag of doggy fabric scraps/strips from the op-shop and gave it to her, she pieced them together into the most beautiful floor mat for him. She's a very talented quilter!

Opened a box of knee high stockings today (4 pairs in a box) and one of the stockings didn't have any elastic in the top. Normally, I'd throw it in the bin and mutter. Today, I wrote a nice letter, enclosed the faulty stocking and have sent it to the manufacturers, requesting a replacement. Fingers crossed!

The Blonde Mop is making dinner tonight .... at least that's what he announced last night. He's going to make hamburgers, and I'm staying out of the kitchen! Might have to give him a recipe to show him how to stretch 500gm of mince for 4 people ... but he'll be fine! Both my kids like using the electric frying pan and flipping stuff and pressing down on it and basically playing ... I figure that the heat kills all the germs, so it's good to eat!

Carelessness and Catastrophies ...

Don't the two always go together?

The saga of my dress continues, went to set the sleeve in and discovered I'd overlocked the back neckline in with the shoulder seam and taken a good 2" off the top. Bother!! Luckily enough, there was enough fabric left over to cut a new back panel. So, unpicking I went, re cut, stitched, and no-one will be the wiser! Next problem is that the sleeve and the arm hole aren't playing nicely together ... mainly due to changes in the pattern I have had to make (to fit my huge bat wing arms) ... so, after some creative cutting, I have pinned the sleeve back in for tacking and trying on. This isn't as much fun as it could be. However, the good news is that once it's done, the pattern will fit well and I can just cut and sew the next one (if there IS a next one) without any fitting or dramas. I guess that's the bonus of altering the pattern as you go!

So, have put that aside for a short while ...

Sewing the next thing, which is 2 dresses for a customer. They are a very simple pattern, think very long singlet with slit up one side. However, the fabric is a shiny stretchy jersey that was horrid to cut out. And, due to various non-brain moments, have had to unpick a fair bit already ... which is sad considering it's such a simple pattern. Firstly, instead of stitching a centre back seam, I stitched the side seams together ... cheated and cut the entire seam off ... there is enough give in this fabric to lose that bit of width. Try again. Next, realised that I hadn't allowed for the side split. Back to the unpicker ... best thing about unpicking is that I'm using a twin needle to stitch the entire thing together so that all I have to do is slice through the zig zag stitches on the back and it all falls apart. Phew. Why twin needles you ask? Because the jersey is so stretchy, it gives some extra stability as well as the overlocking, and as I'm going to twin needle the neck, arms and hem, this is much easier than threading and rethreading each time I do a seam. I did have the foresight to wind 2 bobbins before starting, so that I won't have to stop and re-wind mid project. Always nice!

Also in my sewing basket is a huge amount of sewing for a friend who is currently overseas. That's good, she can't ask me where it is while she's away!! Will get onto that eventually, just not highly motivated ... all basic stuff, but needs bits and pieces of tweaking!

Well, off to the jersey dresses, then to explore the depths of my freezer and see what meals I can come up with for the coming week. Menu planning and money saving sure go hand in hand.

Playing with patterns

Trying another of the op-shop patterns. This one is copyrighted 1974 ... I was 8 way back then! The pattern has never been used, wow ... that's saying something! It's a rather plain pattern, but there is something appealing about the cut and the front bodice.

As something completely new, I decided to tissue fit the pattern ... cut it all out carefully and pinned together. The pattern is a size 18 (yikes) but seems to be ok ... nothing major needs fixing, and as there are 1.5cm seam allowances, there is some measure of adjustment level involved. I bought some teal mechanical stretch fabric (150cm wide & $5.99/metre) ... it will fall beautifully and wash like a dream.

I was going to adjust to make 3/4 length sleeves, however will follow the pattern properly the first time. Who knows, I might just like it, and with winter coming up, the long sleeves may be handy.

The other issue I have is that it's falls just below the knee, whereas I tend to wear everything very long (just above the ankles - ballet length). Might give it a go, with black sheer stockings and black shoes, my legs might fade into the background ...

First toile

Tried this pattern with mixed results. The pattern went together beautifully, the way it is constructed is a delight to sew ... few little tricks here and there. Beautifully crafted pattern, plus, I'm sure that the pattern has never been opened or used before. It was still folded neatly from the factory! The big disappointment was the size. It's designed for a size 14 (36" bust), however, it sure didn't fit me anywhere except the bust shaping, too small across the rib-cage and tummy, plus the sleeve was so very tight and the arm hole very high.

Would have to do some major modifications if I'm going to make it for wearing in public. Certainly have to think about it long and hard before going to all that work ... maybe I'll e-bay the pattern instead.

Op shops and sewing patterns ...

Popped into our local op-shop this morning and had a dig through the pattern box ... what a treasure trove. Picked up all these patterns for $1 (they love me down there!). You can't see all the detail in this one, but the first blouse on the left has pleated detail at the cf neckline. Will make a muslin (toile) and see what fit changes need to be made. Think it's an 80's style, so will be fairly loose (not a bad thing).

The top pattern is 2 dresses, but I thought that I might trim it down to make a nice wrap front blouse. The second pattern is a 70's style dress, it's a size 18.5 (huge) but I like the front detail and the flare. Again, will make a toile, and see what alterations need making. Might have to get my Happy Husband to pin a bit here and there (he's very obliging if you ask nicely).

These patterns are gorgeous. The first on the left is a pattern from the 60's, I really like the pattern pieces inside. The blouse is nicely shaped with darts at the back shoulders and in the elbows on the sleeves. The next top pattern is a misses size 12 (much too small) but I may be able to grade it up. Has a delighful petal neckline. Also from the 60's.

The bottom left is a late 80's number, really nice dress/blouse set, and the bottom right is a 70's number with a pretty bodice detail. Again a size 18.5, but will attempt to grade downwards!

So, all in all, am pretty pleased with my haul. Also picked up some fabric while trawling through the boxes ...

Cough Cough

Been unwell for about 5 weeks now ... started with a raging sore throat and ended up with a cough. Finally I went to the doctor who said I have Whooping Cough (Adult version). Well, there you have it!! I now have fantastic cough medicine (full of codine) and anti-biotics. Am starting to feel somewhat better. It's life as normal now, but I have to stay clear of my parents (both of whom have pneumonia!). That's a blow as we were going to visit on Thursday.

Been wanting to do some sewing but haven't wanted to tackle anything big or hard. So I made some hankies from quilting cotton that I had in the drawer. They came up beautifully, and are bright and pretty! Whilst I've been sick, discovered that I didn't have enough hankies, so this will sure help out!

This morning the kids & I had haircuts, the Blonde Mop actually submitted to having a trim ... he still has the length, but it's much neater and easier for him to care for. Little Miss Sunshine had hers layered and shaped, each time we go to the hairdressers, she ends up looking older! She has bought herself a box of hair dye (violet!!) and we have asked an older friend (17) to help her dye it ... so that's happening next Thursday.

Me with waves ... that's a first!! Normally dead straight ... but it's fun for a change.

To the right which is all my machines, I have a Janome 625E, a Brother overlocker and my new baby, a Janome 350E, I actually have one more sewing machine that isn't shown, but that's a whole different post!

To the left ...

Top drawer of my rolling cart (newly neatened!) ... my scissors are AWOL at present, must find them an put them away. The shears definately need sharpening, that's a job to be done THIS WEEK!

Second drawer (again, newly tidied). See my lovely 'clapper' ... my dad made it for me. I went to a class and was shown how to use them and they were selling them for $35 each. I traced around one, and showed my father, who whipped it up out of some spare wood he had. It is wonderful. The bits of wood next to it are seam allowance measures that dad cut for me. They are 1cm, 1.5cm and 2.5cm so that when I'm pattern cutting, I can just lay them on the line and rule, and I'll get a perfect seam allowance without having to dot dot dot rule ... much easier!

Feeling quite positive about getting in and actually organising the rest of the sewing stuff!

Sunday Skate!

Yesterday Little Miss Sunshine had her first Rollerskating Competition. She's involved in the Exhibition Skate which is a precurser to actually being judged. The children in her ability level go out onto the floor and just skate and show off what they can do for 3-5 minutes. It's basically a confidence builder so that they get used to skating infront of an audience and judges (although the judges seemed to view it as a break time!).

Considering it was her first ever event, I thought she did very well. She had to cope with a different floor, and the fact that neither of us knew what was going on! Live and learn I guess.

We did have a score as there was a stand of second hand leotards which we trawled through and found the most beautiful pink lycra/velvet confection. It fitted her perfectly and looks fantastic. Will be perfect for the next Comp (about a month's time). Cost $55, however, it did save me having to make anything.

I was very impressed and quite amazed at the varying leotards, the styles, the fit, the shape and oh, everything ... can see that once she gets a little bigger and out of pre-loved ones, I'll have to be sewing up a storm.

Out and about!

Yesterday I did some clothes shopping, FOR ME!! I went to 2 op-shops and brought home a huge haul ... very proud of myself! I got

all in one flannel pj's (my husband says that I look cute) (new)
black skirt for work
multi-coloured long sleeve knit shirt (for work)
ankle height boots (new) Sandler Easy Steps
4 magazines (2 cross stitch, 2 sewing)
piglet rugby jumper (new)
bra (brand new!)

For a total of $24 ... I was very impressed with myself.

Today after rollerskating, Little Miss Sunshine & I went to a different shopping centre and did some more winter shopping for her. Spent $117 and got 1 hooded zip jacket, 1 pair pjs (3 piece) and 3 bras (oh plus undies for the Blonde Mop). Also did a bit of food shopping on our travels (which is nice because the family does like eating!). LMS has decided that she likes "new clothes" as compared to "op-shop clothes". I had to bite my tongue so I didn't get down her throat (so to speak). I gently suggested that she gets more clothes from the op-shop, and that it is still a good place to shop. Notice the difference in the quantity and price between her shop and mine?? Oh well ...

Off to have a shower and get into my cuddly pj's ... 'night night ... Mrs R

Isn't it amazing what you can do with an embroidery machine, a sewing machine, a bit of fabric and a keen and eager teenager? He is so rapt with this headband and has spent quite some time adjusting it so it looks good with his hair!

Busy Thursday

Phew, finally come home to a very happy Charlie Dog ... he misses me while I'm at work! Last day of work at the local high school today. They gave me a beautiful plant to say "thanks for helping us out this term" which was so kind of them. I had a very interesting, growthful time, and they were all very patient with me and I have learnt alot. I go to a new high school next term for 3 days a week. More learning I figures! Oh, in case you are wondering, I work as a relief School Officer, I have my name down at 3 high schools within a 20 min drive from home. The hours are good and it works in well with the family, plus I can get part time work that suits sporting commitments (children!)

Little Miss Sunshine & her friend caught the bus to the local rec centre for National Youth Day. The local YAC (Youth Advisory Council) are having an open cafe night with a movie (on a huge screen cinema sized screen). On the way home the Blonde Mop & I dropped in to see what was happening. He got involved in a game of poker, and the girls & I played Twister. My Happy Husband will pick LMS up after the movie (Surf's Up).

The Blonde Mop came home with a yellow headband. He asked if I'd make him a new one with a Nike brand on it. It's do-able. Unfortunately, we could only find some white stretchy stuff, and he really wanted yellow, but the white will apparently do for tomorrow. TBM asked if He could go shopping on the way home (late night trading) so off we went. He knew exactly what he wanted, and found school track pants at K-mart (I found some lovely foundation which cost more than his pants!), then off to Target where he got a windbreaker and a pair of new work trousers. Phew! At least he's a discerning shopper and knows what he wants and likes, plus is prepared to accept boundaries of finances and my shopping patience!

Off to make dinner I think - spag bol sounds like the go - quick easy and no fuss (plus very very filling!)

Monday Madness

Well, before breakfast, I managed to put up 6 pairs of trousers for a customer, phew! All done. Also been discovering the wonderful world of sewing blogs ... oh I am so inspired and motivated. I guess the first step is to actually clean up my sewing area so that I can 'create'.

The kids are out of school today, as we are going to our friend's funeral. He was 14. It will be a sad service, but a very important way of saying 'goodbye' ...

The Blonde Mop will brush his hair for the occasion (he's been told), and we've had a few wardrobe consults (mainly me saying ... "no" ... try again!) ... settled on a t-shirt (with attitude) & checked long shorts with skate shoes, very appropriate. Little Miss Sunshine has had 2 changes thus far, and is now in a summer dress (shades of white, rust, brown & hints of black) with bright blue shoes (with silver dangles & jingles), a black cardigan and a brown furry handbag. It's quite delightful ...

After the cuppa after the service, we will go off for lunch at the shopping centre, then to the hospital to have Little Miss Sunshine's finger re-xrayed to see if there is a fracture or not. Also find out exactly what she can and can't do and for how long.

The Blonde Mop is working again this evening, so will have to be home and get him back to work in time for 5pm (although he was smart enough to let them know that he may get in a little late, depending on how long we have to wait at the hospital).

My Happy Husband had a clever friend over yesterday afternoon, who fixed up our wireless connection. We can now have 3 people on the internet at once ... plus the Wii is also hooked up wire-less-ly. The Blonde Mop spent some time uploading and figuring it out this morning.

Well, best go put my best face on (with the aid of a well lit mirror) and skedaddle (will check for tissues first!).

Patchwork handbag

I made bag late last year, but it's so pretty I wanted to share it. It was my first experiment with patchwork. Most of the seams line up, but the lace was a saving grace that covered up any 'fudges'. The pattern came from the magazine "Handmade" which I borrowed from the town library. I made another one which I had intentions of selling, however Little Miss Sunshine liked it so much she got it!!

Well, here we are, I'm typing, you're reading ... what a nice way to start a blog!

It's been a lovely Sunday. My friend took my daughter and I to church. The pastor preached from Romans. He is working through the book. Last week he did Verses 1 & 2 of Chapter 1 and today he did Verses 3 & 4 of Chapter 1. If he's going at this rate, it's going to last all year and maybe then some! Regardless of that, was a lovely service, and nice to be part of the fellowship.

My parents came over for arvo tea and Little Miss Sunshine (our daughter) made hash browns for snacks. Was rather funny watching her cook, she has dislocated her little finger on her dominant hand, and it's somewhat limiting, but she's pressing on regardless. Mum, Dad, the Blonde Mop (our son) & I played the Wii bowling. Was lots of fun. Dad kept on forgetting to keep his feet tucked in and mum & I were constantly tripping over them as we bowled.

I've been puddling around making Little Artist's Folios recently, and wanted to make myself something for work. I took the Note taker design and 'tweaked it' ... I had got a lovely well worn Italian Suit from the op-shop (free - it was moth hole-y) ... and knew that it would make something quirky.

Only cooked for 3 tonight as the Blonde Mop is working. Having a job has been wonderful for him, he is learning about work ethic, money management and the best thing (for me) is that he gets dinner to bring home. Anyways, I made a pasta sauce (of sorts). I cooked up some bacon, tin of tomatoes, 3/4 jar of pasta sauce, diced capsicum & onion, and a grated carrot. Served over cooked macaroni and topped with grated cheese. Delicious. AND there is enough left over for my husband's lunch tomorrow. Bonus.

Anyways, that's enough for my first post. Stay tuned, tomorrow I aim to post the photo of my work note-taker.
